About Dronfield
The Town of Dronfield comprises three communities of Dronfield, Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston. It is delightfully situated completely encircled by "Green Belt" and nestling in the eastern foothills of the Pennines only three miles from the Peak District National Park. The finest beauty spots of Derbyshire are within easy travelling distance and yet the town is about six miles equidistant from the busy commercial centres of Sheffield to the North and Chesterfield to the South.
The Township covers an area of 3,457 acres and its population has increased dramatically in post war years from 6,500 in 1945 to almost 23,000 today. The residential development has been well consolidated and the centre of the town retains its ancient character, with many fine old buildings of historic interest and the splendid early Gothic Parish Church, which celebrated its 850th anniversary in 1985. The industry of the town has developed alongside the residential growth and Dronfield now hosts a wide variety of firms ranging from well-established engineering works to modern computer technology.
The town is very fortunate in its sports and leisure facilities. A three-day Feast of Flowers was held in Dronfield from 22nd to 25th June 1995. This unique event showed Dronfield to be "A Town Speaking in Flowers". The Feast, which has a long history, was one of Derbyshire's main events in 1995. It was organised by a committee drawn from the Town and District Councils, the Council of Churches, the schools and a wide range of local organisations as well as local groups from surrounding villages and was sponsored by local firms, industries and traders. In addition to fifteen fully decorated churches, many gardens were open to the public and buildings decorated. The Feast raised money for charity and was a resounding success.
Dronfield is a flourishing and caring community where continual improvements to the environment and the social facilities are of prime importance. The Town has much to offer the visitor both in itself and as an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful countryside and attractions of Derbyshire.
